NFVF Drive-In proposal submissions

The National Film and Video Foundation (NFVF) is an agency of the Department of Sports, Arts and Culture that was created to ensure the equitable growth of South Africa’s film and video industry. In light of the effects of COVID-19 on the film industry, we have decided to use alternate ways to reach our audience through the introduction of a Drive-in strategy.

The Drive-In initiative aims to provide relief to communities hard hit by COVID-19, to offer alternative forms of entertainment whilst creating job opportunities for SMMEs and providing a life-line for filmmakers. Although cinemas have been given the green light to operate under Lockdown Level 3, they will only operate at 50% capacity.

A drive-in initiative will enable the NFVF to follow through on the support for films funded by the NFVF in a measured way, whilst assisting filmmakers with distribution methods for their content to reach audiences. This would also give us the opportunity to partner with different Provincial structures and municipalities as well as potential commercial partners.

Closing date for submissions:    Submission Date: 24 July 2020

The screen can be as simple as a wall that is painted white, or it can be a steel truss structure with a complex finish. Drive-In screenings are uniquely positioned to limit physical contact yet provide a comfortable viewing space. With the right safety and healthy measures applied – Drive-Inns screenings can be implemented in the current lock-down provisions.
