All the winners at the 2020 Saftas
The 14th South African Film and Television Awards (Saftas) ceremony took a different shape this year.
In March the National Film and Video Foundation (NFVF) announced that the ceremonies scheduled to be held on 27 and 28 March was cancelled due to the National State of Disaster announced by President Cyril Ramaphosa following the outbreak of the coronavirus in South Africa. On Saturday the foundation announced that Saftas14 would be held virtually on Twitter, Facebook and YouTube and hosted by Dineo Ranaka.
The live broadcast on Wednesday faced several delays it was first moved from 17:00 to 20:00. At 22:47 Saftas announced on their Facebook page that they would go live at 22:50. About the delays the NFVF said in a statement to Channel24: “We are aware of the technical issues that limited our ability to stream the Saftas14 broadcast at the times communicated to the public.
“Our film and television industry, who, without a doubt work tirelessly to provide us with the best on-screen entertainment deserve to be honoured in the best way possible for amazing work they do. We sincerely apologise for the inconvenience caused to the film and television industry, the media and our film and television supporters.”
The big winners of the night were Tshedza Pictures, scooping 17 awards in total. The feature film Knuckle City bagged six wins. South Africa’s Best Television Presenter Award voted for by the public was Hectic on 3’s Entle Bizana, with the Most Popular TV Soap/Telenovela awarded to Imbewu.
The Best Actor in a Telenovela and Best Actress in a Telenovela categories won cash prizes to the tune of R50 000, sponsored by Kunene Makopo Risk Solutions (KMRS).
“It is an incredibly bittersweet moment to congratulate all the SAFTAs 14 winners whilst they could not experience a full celebration of their hard work. We thank the industry for understanding and supporting the NFVF in the difficult decisions that had to be made during this crisis, and the NFVF is fully committed to ensuring that the industry gets as much support as it needs during a time where livelihoods are heavily impacted,” said NFVF CEO Makhosazana Khanyile
