High Fantasy comes to local screens

The internationally recognised, locally produced feature film, High Fantasy directed by Jenna Bass will be coming to select South African screens from 16 November 2018.

High Fantasy follows a group of diverse young friends who mysteriously swap bodies while on a camping trip on a remote farm and are forced to reassess their friendship. Director, Jenna Bass and her stellar cast (Qondiswa James, Nala Khumalo, Francesca Varrie Michel, Liza Scholtz and Loren Loubser) collaborated on the writing and production, creating a workshop film with truly diverse perspectives while shooting entirely with an iPhone 7.

The movie has been hailed by The Verge as “smart, vibrant film-making” and by Shadow & Act as a “piercing examination of race, class and gender” within the Fees Must Fall generation. Premiering at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2017, where it was described as “Ingenious” by NOW Magazine; High Fantasy went on to screen at the Berlin International Film Festival, and many other prestigious showcases. At the 2018 Durban Film Festival, High Fantasy was awarded Best South African Feature, as well as the Award for Artistic Bravery. Now, South African audiences can look forward to a unique body-swap comedy that interrogates ‘Rainbow Nation’ identity politics in the era of the selfie.

“The international response to High Fantasy so far has been extraordinary,” says director, Jenna Bass, “It goes to show that the things that are important to us in South Africa are global conversations, as well as that young people are excited by new kinds of films; fresh approaches to characters and ideas we can relate to.”

High Fantasy continues to garner acclaim from critics and audiences alike for its original blend of humour, politics, art and humanity, summed up by The Playlist as follows: “High Fantasy is art we shouldn’t’ be able to look away from. Thanks to Bass, we can’t.”

From 16 November 2018, the film will be showing for audiences in Cape Town at The Labia and Johannesburg at The Bioscope.
