27 February 2025 Film and TV Industry DTIC Picket

Last week Thursday, on 27 February 2025, members of the Independent Black Filmmakers Collective, Independent Producers Organisation, Animation SA, South African Film Empowerment, and the Documentary Filmmakers Association, along with various industry leaders, community partners, and allies of the creative sector, gathered outside the Department of Trade, Industry and Competition (DTIC) in Tshwane for a peaceful picket. The demonstration aimed to highlight growing concerns over the department’s failure to address critical issues affecting the film and television industry.

More than 200 people attended the picket at the DTIC campus, demanding accountability for funds allocated through the Treasury to support and grow the sector. Protesters also called for an investigation into the mismanagement of the industry’s designated budget.

A Memorandum of Demands, developed in consultation with industry stakeholders and organisational allies, was handed over to the DTIC’s Chief Director, Justice Ngwenya. He signed the document and retained a copy to ensure accountability. You can access the full Memorandum of Demands HERE.

The ball is now firmly in the Ministry’s court. As an industry, we are now actively awaiting their response and will not relent until these concerns are addressed. We will continue to keep our members informed on any further developments.
