SOS Coalition: Advancing Public Service Media in South Africa
On August 23rd, 2024, the SOS Coalition, in partnership with various civil society organisations and industry stakeholders, convened a pivotal event aimed at advancing public service media in South Africa. The gathering, which took place in Johannesburg, was a convergence of minds dedicated to the revitalisation and sustainability of South Africa’s public service media, especially the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC). The Independent Producers Organisation (IPO) was also in attendance in support of the event, and the strengthening of the independent media landscape in the country. The event featured a series of panel discussions, presentations, and open forums where participants could share their insights and experiences. One of the central themes of the day was the need for an independent and well-resourced public service media that can operate free from political and commercial pressures. Participants emphasised the importance of safeguarding editorial independence and ensuring that the SABC remains accountable to the public rather than to political or commercial interests.
Another critical topic was the role of civil society in holding public service media accountable. The SOS Coalition and its partners highlighted the need for continued advocacy and vigilance to protect the integrity of public broadcasting. This includes pushing for policy reforms that would strengthen the SABC’s governance structures and financial sustainability.
A highlight of the event was the launch of a comprehensive research report on the state of public service media in South Africa. The report, which was the result of extensive consultation with various stakeholders, provides a detailed analysis of the challenges facing the SABC and offers recommendations for reform.
Among the key recommendations were calls for increased funding for the SABC, the establishment of a more robust governance framework, and the creation of mechanisms to ensure greater public participation in the oversight of the broadcaster. The report also stressed the importance of innovation and adapting to the digital age, as traditional broadcasting faces increasing competition from online platforms.
The event concluded with a call to action for all stakeholders to continue working together to ensure the future of public service media in South Africa. The SOS Coalition, along with its partners, pledged to intensify their advocacy efforts and to engage with policymakers, the SABC, and the public to drive the necessary reforms.
