Toolbox: Contracts for Post-Production
The IPO is currently collating streamlined, customisable contract templates for use by its members. As part of this series, we would like to draw your attention to the contracts and employment conditions resources made available by the SA Guild of Editors (SAGE) who are a fellow SASFED affiliate alongside the IPO.
Who is SAGE?
The South African Guild of Editors is a voluntary, non-profit organisation which represents film and video picture editors, assistant editors and sound editors. Since its inception in the early 90s, SAGE has become a recognised player in the film and television industry. With more than 100 active members, the guild represents most of the best talent in the feature film, TV drama, documentary, insert, on-line and sound editing in South Africa today.
Contract for Independent Contractors
The SAGE contract for Independent Contractors was finalised in 2015 by the Guild’s legal counsel. This very comprehensive document so that it can be adapted as needed for each situation and is available on their website. Please note that this is specifically for editors working as Independent Contractors. Editors working permanently or on fixed-term contracts are regarded as employees by the Department of Labour. The guidelines on the Contract of Work Conditions and contract template are designed to protect both parties (producer and editor) as far as possible.
